Hi friend,
With this being the first issue of Social Media Detox in 2022, let me say happy new year! I hope you’ve been doing well so far.
This is coming to you one week late because, well, we all know last week was a test run.
That’s the energy I hope to embrace this year, and maybe you will too.
We don’t have to jump into perfection. We don’t have to overhaul our lives overnight.
We can make mistakes. We can dip our toes into the water.
We can try things knowing that they may very well not work out.
I hope you take a test run of something new this year.
Here’s to more trying, more failing, more learning.
with warmth + love,
N

📚 The Click Throughs
Long-form reads for the marketing geek + content creator
Forbes: How Emotional Intelligence And Cultural Relevance Builds Brands With Anna Melissa
I don’t know if words can do this interview enough justice. Nike copywriter Anna Melissa is an absolute queen and I’ll obsess over anything she does. This piece is a brief look into her mind and how she prioritizes culture to create relevant, resonant brand work.
Teen Vogue: Black Culture Archives on Instagram: Empowerment, Surveillance & Reclamation
This piece highlights important Instagram pages such as We The Diaspora and Culture Art Society that serve as a virtual space of remembrance for Black stories and points of view that are often overlooked.
Vox: This is your brain on obsession
Did you own a Tamagotchi growing up? 90s kids remember the thrill and excitement that came from keeping that little digital pet alive. This piece theorizes how our early obsessions with those virtual creatures may potentially have led to our shortened attention spans and tendency to chase dopamine hits.
Adweek: How to Protect Your Mental Health as a Marketer in 2022
I'm biased on this one, because I wrote it. But I truly feel strongly that, as we go into this new year, it’s important to set yourself up for realistic success. I created this newsletter based on the idea that you shouldn’t have to unplug to prioritize your mental health, and this piece is just another part of that.
But if unplugging is one of your goals in 2022... blogger Jess Ann Kirby recently published this personal essay on what she learned from her Instagram break. This line really hit me: “If Instagram wasn’t responsible for a large part of my financial livelihood would I still be there?”

Things I’ve been loving that have absolutely nothing to do with marketing or business
The Atlantic: You Can’t Simply Decide to Be a Different Person – As we all approach new years resolutions, don’t feel bad if you can’t completely transform your habits. You weren’t necessarily wired to do so.
Modern Retail: How Erewhon Market became the coveted stamp of approval for CPG startups – The first time I visited LA (October) I literally went to Erewhon 3 times in 48 hours. If you’re as interested in what they’re doing for modern CPG companies, read on.
The New Yorker: It’s Time To Embrace Slow Productivity – I’m a huge fan of Cal Newport’s philosophies on work and this one is no different. Embracing less hustle this year and more slow work.
Sprudge: Do you love coffee without cream or sugar? It could be genetic – I found this short article so interesting. My entire family has a sweet tooth and I do too, so maybe there’s some accuracy to this?
InStyle: If Your New Year’s Resolution Is to Play a Dead Body on Law & Order, Here’s How – This piece was just plain entertaining. Exactly what you’d expect out of the title from someone who’s done it.

Ideas for you to take into your week ahead as a content creator
What content are you excited to create in 2022?
What content did you want to create in 2021 that you didn’t get to create?
Can you bring that dream content into 2022?
Think about it.
Your plans are probably already set, but what if you could make one last edit. What would you do?
