Hi friend,
You can have joy and sadness at the same time.
I've had a lot of good days recently. Hopefully you have too!
As summer came underway, I think a lot of moods lifted and we generally said goodbye to seasonal depression.
Sure, that can help. But it's also not fair to put all the blame on the seasons.
I've had a lot of good days, but there are still complex, deep, tough, complicated feelings underneath.
A few sunny days doesn't mean that goes away entirely. You shouldn't feel like it's an either/or situation.
You can have a lot of good days and have tough emotions brewing in the background.
You can be so happy about one thing while also being sad about another.
You can have complex feelings, you don't have to pick one.
Here's to more happy moments and navigating the complexities.
with warmth + love,
N
P.S. I’ll be on vacation next week, so YSMD will return (for the 30th issue!!) on July 29 ✌️

It's no secret that I love everything Rachel Karten publishes. But this collection of data is one not to be missed. This piece showcases the results of a survey Rachel sent out detailing the compensation of social media workers. Please review this + take it to your salary negotiations.
Wired: I'm Not a Reporter. But I'm Verified as One on Twitter
When Twitter relaunched applications for verification, everyone swarmed to get that sweet sweet blue checkmark. So much so that some are turning to apply under labels that aren't exactly theirs.
Refinery29: Do You Trust This Momfluencer? Good, Because She Has Something To Sell You
It's all fun + games until someone has an MLM to sell you on. In all honesty, I found this dive into mommy communities + how they breed pyramid schemes fascinating.

Things I’ve been loving that have absolutely nothing to do with marketing or business
Rainesford Stauffer: It's Okay to Outgrow the Life You Thought You Wanted – I felt this piece so deeply. At many points in my life, I've had expectations of what or where I'd be + they fell flat. Still coming to terms with this being a normal part of life.
Verge: Roblox, explained – If you're a parent rolling your eyes, please disregard. If you don't have children + are trying to understand this obsession of all your friends/family's/coworkers' kids, this is a very helpful explainer. File under: I refuse to admit that I'm growing old + out-of-touch.
Weekly Hurdle: The 4 R's Of Habit Formation – No one like Emily Abbate to get me back out of my ruts + this piece hits on exactly why. This piece is also part of her Weekly Hurdle newsletter which, if you sign up as a monthly subscriber (only $10/mo!), has a monthly journaling challenge going on right now to inspire you with daily thought prompts to get you writing!
Vox: Why do we buy what we buy? – This is a fascinating dive into the psychology behind why we buy so many things + what we buy. TL;DR unsurprisingly, we buy what we think will create the life we aspire to live.
Vice: The Argument for Everyone Taking This Entire Summer Off – This piece is written for those in the UK, but I'd like to make the petition to start this in America too, please + thank you.

💭 Content Calendar
Ideas for you to take into your week ahead as a content creator
Give yourself permission to take time for deep work.
The Slack notifications can wait. The emails will still be there. There will always be more admin work.
But you are a creator, at your core.
That's what you were put in your position to do (probably).
So, create. Create shamelessly. Create however you need to.
Even if that means shutting the world off for a bit.
